Urban Delights

Designer’s Eye is a series of articles in which I offer a graphic designer’s view of the world.

Keeping Your Eyes Wide Open

We live “inside the loop” in Houston, Texas—i.e., within Loop 610, a freeway that forms a loop around the inner-city area. Despite our close proximity to the freeway, we experience nature in unexpected places.

My neighbor’s garden has frequently caught my attention as I turn the corner into my neighborhood. This plant is a show-stopper—its foliage alone puts some flowering varieties to shame. The maroon leaves turn into the most vibrant red you’ve ever seen, and then the plant produces bright yellow leaves as it continues to grow.

On a recent humid summer morning, I woke to see an elaborate display of “snail art” on the panes of our west-facing windows. We have six large picture windows in this room. Each window was covered with the meandering trails of visiting snails.

Two nights ago we were alerted to a visitor by our very excited dog. We looked outside to see a yellow crowned night heron taking a rest on the roof of our garage.

I will continue to keep my eyes open. You never know what you’ll see next in the concrete jungle!

    Hi Matt,
Several of my clients are other small businesses who want websites that are easy to update. I have found WordPress (CMS) to be a good tool that allows design flexibility, but also offers a friendlier backend than html or php. Thanks for your inquiry and for visiting my site!
